Sorry y’all for the super belated garden post. Another updated one will be coming for today’s Dig In. Check out all the cool and informative pics that Steven took last week!
Bed Updates 12. (Plant Progress - Oct 5th) The Butter Crunch Lettuce looks ready to eat! Steven will be bringing a fork this Sunday. See lettuce below. 1. (Plant Progress - Oct 19th) Onions and Rainbow Swiss Chard are still in progress. 3. (Plant Progress - Oct 19th) Cabbage and Onions in progress. 3A. (Plant Progress - Oct 19th) Nasturtiums are doing great. 5. (Plant Progress - Oct 26th) Our most successful crop this year so far, we think. So much kale! It’s starting to really resemble how the developed leaves look too! Growth! See kale below. 4. (Plant Progress - Nov 2nd) Radishes are showing growth. 8. (Plant Progress - Nov 9th) Wild Nasturtiums! Or at least unplanned. These will be good as aphid magnets, keeping those pesky bugs off our plants come springtime when they come in WAVES. Super tasty, like fiery arugula too! (The nasturtium, not the aphids.) See below progress. 10. (Plant Progress - Nov 9th) We forgot to check on the Scarlet Nantes carrots and the Tokyo long White-Bunching Onions :/ 7. (Seed Sowing) We planted radish. We’ll report back on how much and what type. 9. (Seed Sowing) Cabbage and pole bean seeds were sowed in. 13. (Seed Sowing) Sage was added to the herb bed. Wine Barrels (Seed Sowing) We planted peas in each of the three westernmost wine barrels. We put them close to the edge, in equal distance from each other around the whole barrel. The idea is to tie them onto a teepee trellis where there is a center wooden pole and string coming from the top to the base of each plant. 2, 6, 11. Empty | Compost The experiment is underway, this week we added food scraps, watered, and turned the compost. Garden Periphery We pulled up grass along the fence & about the trees. Yay weeding! Look at our pretty fig tree: Pomelo Tree Below is new growth on pomelo! It isn’t dead! Still, we’ll see how it develops. Hopefully disease free. Hammock The hammock is operational! We should probably still dig out the area around it to allow a little more movement possible. What a great addition to the garden! Now we need to refurb ol’ Blaze Pascal our retired scarecrow :) |
Suggestions for next week:
The Environmental Student Network will be joining us next week, so maybe we’ll be able to get all of this done!
- build a pea trellis for the wine barrels
- fix the fence
- construct shades for seedlings using weed barrier
- sow seeds in egg cartons?
- raise the hammock (if the ladder is still in the garden)
- process those basil seeds from Week 0
- more signs
